Deferiprone is an orally active iron chelator that binds excess ferric iron in a 3:1 molar ratio and promotes its urinary excretion. It penetrates cardiac tissue effectively, offering cardioprotective benefit in patients with transfusional iron overload. Indicated for the treatment of iron overload in patients with thalassaemia major when current chelation therapy is contraindicated or inadequate, and for transfusional iron overload in other anaemias including sickle cell disease and myelodysplastic syndromes.
